Dry savannas, open woodlands, and cultivation with scattered trees in parts of sub-Saharan Africa (from Mauritania to Ethiopia, and south to South Africa) and parts of the Indian subcontinent.
How to spot
Look for its slender build, dark grey upperparts, white underparts, and bright rufous (red) nape and crown. Often perches upright on exposed branches or power lines. Its call is a sharp 'chik-kik-kik.'

Active during the day, often seen hunting around dawn and dusk. Observable year-round.
