Spotted
Steller's Sea Eagle is one of the world's largest and heaviest raptors, an imposing bird of prey with distinctive white shoulders and tail. It is a specialist fish and seabird hunter of cold coastal regions.
Where to spot
Found in Northeast Asia, primarily along the coasts of Russia (Kamchatka, Sakhalin), Korea, and Japan. It inhabits coastal areas, large rivers, and estuaries.
How to spot
Look for its colossal size, dark body, white shoulders, and white wedge-shaped tail. Its massive yellow bill is unmistakable. Scan coastal areas, ice floes, and river mouths.
When to spot
Active throughout the day. Best observed in winter when they gather at ice-free waters for fishing. Observable year-round in its breeding range.
