The Rufous-thighed Kite is a medium-sized raptor of the Amazon Basin, recognized by the rufous coloration on its thighs. It is a forest dweller, primarily preying on insects and small vertebrates.
Where to spot
Found in the Amazon Basin of South America (Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia). It inhabits tropical moist lowland forests.
How to spot
Scan the forest canopy and edges for soaring individuals or birds perched on exposed branches. The rufous thighs are a good identifying feature when visible.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen soaring above the canopy or hunting from a perch. Observable year-round in its resident range.
