Where to spot
Inhabits the arid and semi-arid steppes, deserts, and rocky plains of Central Asia, including Mongolia, parts of China, and Russia.
How to spot
Look for this medium-sized bird walking or running rapidly across open terrain. Its patterned plumage provides good camouflage. Listen for its varied calls, which can be harsh or more melodic.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, particularly in the morning and late afternoon when foraging on the ground.
