The Spotted Owl is a medium-sized owl with dark eyes and distinct white spots on its brown plumage. It is closely associated with old-growth forests, where it finds suitable nesting and hunting grounds.
Where to spot
Inhabits mature and old-growth coniferous and mixed forests, as well as canyon woodlands. Its range extends across western North America, from British Columbia down through California and into Mexico.
How to spot
Listen for their four-note hooting call, which is characteristic. Locate roosting sites in dense tree canopies during the day, often near tree cavities or broken-topped trees.
When to spot
Primarily nocturnal, becoming active from dusk through dawn. Observation is most successful at night, particularly by listening for their calls.
