Spotted
The Himalayan Wood Owl is a robust and often elusive owl species native to the Himalayan region. Its mottled brown plumage provides excellent camouflage within its forested mountain habitat.
Where to spot
Typically found in dense montane and submontane forests, including mixed and coniferous woodlands, across the Himalayas from northern India to Bhutan, Nepal, and parts of Southeast Asia.
How to spot
Listen for their deep, somewhat mournful hooting calls echoing through mountain valleys. Spotting them requires patience and careful scanning of dense tree cover.
When to spot
Primarily nocturnal, though occasionally active at dusk or dawn. The best observation times are during the night, especially when listening for their calls.
Once considered a subspecies of the Brown Wood Owl, the Himalayan Wood Owl was recognized as a distinct species due to unique vocalizations and genetic differences.
