Spotted
The Brown Wood Owl is a large, striking owl species known for its dark eyes and distinctive facial disc. It is a formidable nocturnal hunter found across a broad range in Asia.
Where to spot
Look for this owl in dense forests, plantations, and well-wooded areas, often near water bodies, across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and parts of East Asia.
How to spot
Listen for their deep, resonant 'hoo-hoo-hoo' calls, especially after dark. Spotting them can be challenging due to their excellent camouflage; look for large silhouettes perched on tree branches or in dense foliage.
When to spot
Primarily nocturnal, the best time to observe is at dusk or during the night when they are most active. Their distinctive hooting calls are often heard during breeding season.
