Spotted
A distinctive antpitta with a variegated, patterned plumage, making it stand out among its plainer relatives. It is a shy inhabitant of humid lowland and foothill forests.
Where to spot
Found in the humid lowland and foothill Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic vocalizations. Due to its secretive nature, patience is key. Focus on scanning the forest floor in dense undergrowth, especially near ravines or streams.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its specific forest habitat.
This species was recently moved to its own monotypic genus, Cryptopezus, reflecting its unique genetic and morphological characteristics within the antpitta family.
