Spotted
A critically endangered and highly localized antpitta, endemic to a tiny area in the Western Andes of Colombia. It is a shy inhabitant of humid montane cloud forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very small area of humid montane cloud forest in the Western Andes of Colombia, specifically near the municipality of Urrao in Antioquia department.
How to spot
Its unique vocalizations are the primary key to detection. Due to its extreme rarity and shyness, finding it requires dedicated effort and local expert guidance in its dense, restricted habitat.
When to spot
Best observed during early morning, particularly at dawn when it is most vocal. Can be found year-round in its specific high-altitude cloud forest habitat.
This species was only discovered and formally described in 2007, and its extremely small range makes it one of the rarest and most threatened antpittas.
