A cryptic antpitta species, also recently split from the Rufous Antpitta complex, found in the high-elevation forests of southern Peru. It is a difficult bird to observe visually.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests and cloud forests of southern Peru, typically at very high elevations in the Andes.

Its unique vocalizations are the best way to locate this elusive species. Observing it requires extreme patience and a quiet approach in its dense forest habitat, as it typically stays hidden on the forest floor.
When to spot
Most active and vocal at dawn and early morning. It is present year-round within its specific high-altitude forest range.
This species was only recognized as distinct in 2020, showcasing the ongoing advancements in avian taxonomy, particularly for skulking forest birds where vocal differences are paramount.
