Spotted
The South Island Kōkako is a large, endemic New Zealand wattlebird, historically characterized by its orange facial wattles and flute-like song. It is sadly considered extinct, with no confirmed sightings since 1967.
Where to spot
Critically endangered/presumed extinct. Historically endemic to the South Island of New Zealand, found in native podocarp-broadleaf forests. No confirmed sightings for decades.
How to spot
Observation is no longer possible in nature. Historically, its loud, flute-like song would have been the best way to detect it in dense forests, along with looking for its orange wattles.
When to spot
Presumed extinct, cannot be observed in nature. Historically, active during daylight, especially vocal at dawn.
