Spotted
The North Island Kōkako is a large, endemic New Zealand wattlebird, renowned for its beautiful blue facial wattles and rich, flute-like song. It is a shy and largely arboreal forest bird.
Where to spot
Endemic to the North Island of New Zealand, found in isolated pockets of native podocarp-broadleaf forest, particularly in conservation reserves where predator control is active.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, resonant song, especially at dawn in native forests. Look up into the canopy, as they spend most of their time in trees, often jumping and gliding between branches. The blue wattles are a clear identification feature.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal and active at dawn and dusk. The breeding season (spring-summer) offers the best chances to hear their elaborate songs.

The Kōkako's song is one of the most beautiful and complex in the avian world, often described as organ-like, with long, resonating notes, and can carry long distances through the forest.
