The Black-faced Firefinch is a striking finch found in the dry savannas of West Africa. Males have a distinctive black face, contrasting sharply with a crimson body and brown back.
Where to spot
Found in dry savannas and grasslands of West Africa, from Mali to Sudan. Prefers areas with scattered bushes.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground. The male's black facial mask is the unmistakable identification feature. Females are duller.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed during early mornings and late afternoons.
