Spotted
The Malaysian Rufous-backed Babbler is a small, relatively plain babbler with a warm rufous back and crown. It is a secretive resident of dense undergrowth in lowland forests.
Where to spot
Found in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. It inhabits lowland evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, preferring dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Look for its rufous back and crown. It moves quietly through dense foliage near the ground. Listen for its soft, often repetitive, whistled calls, which can be hard to pinpoint.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Can be challenging to see due to its skulking nature.
This species often forages in small, loose groups, meticulously searching for insects among dead leaves and low vegetation.
