Spotted
The Orange River Francolin is a shy and elusive ground-dwelling bird found in the arid and semi-arid regions of Southern Africa. Its drab plumage offers superb camouflage against the dry, rocky terrains it prefers.
Where to spot
Inhabits stony hillsides, rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds, and sparse shrublands across arid parts of Southern Africa, extending into some East African regions.
How to spot
Look for movement among rocks or along dry riverbeds. Listening for its characteristic cackling or chattering call, often given from a prominent perch, is key to locating this species.
When to spot
Best observed at dawn and dusk when individuals are most active, foraging more openly before retreating to cover during the heat of the day.
This francolin is known for its loud and repetitive calls, which, despite its secretive nature, can carry far across its open, dry habitats, often revealing its presence.
