Spotted
The Smoky-bellied Warbler is a subtle leaf warbler, characterized by its dull olive-brown upperparts and smoky-greyish underparts, often with a faint pale supercilium. It is a secretive bird of dense undergrowth.
Where to spot
Breeds in parts of the Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan) and China, migrating south to India and Southeast Asia for winter. Found in dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Focus on dense undergrowth and the lower canopy. Its quiet movements and subtle coloration require patience. Listening for its soft calls is often the best approach.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration, and in winter in its southern range.
Its subdued plumage provides excellent camouflage in the shaded undergrowth, making it a challenging species to observe visually.
