Spotted
The Slaty-legged Crake (Lewinia striata) is a widespread but secretive species of crake found across South and Southeast Asia. It inhabits wet grasslands and marshy areas, often near forests.
Where to spot
Marshes, swamps, wet grasslands, rice paddies, and dense vegetation near water sources across a wide range in South and Southeast Asia, from India to Indonesia and the Philippines.
How to spot
Listen for its calls from dense cover. Look for brief glimpses as it moves quickly through vegetation near water. Requires significant patience due to its shy and elusive nature.
When to spot
Year-round resident in many areas, but some populations may undertake local movements. Most active at dawn and dusk when foraging.
