The Tongan Bush-hen (Amaurornis magnirostris) is a species of rail endemic to the remote island of Taveuni in Fiji. Little is known about this elusive bird, which is characterized by its dull plumage and robust bill.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Taveuni in Fiji. Inhabits dense forest undergrowth and overgrown plantations, often in wet areas.
How to spot
Due to its rarity and secretive nature, observation is very challenging. Focus on quiet forest trails, listening intently for any calls or movements in the dense undergrowth. Patience and luck are critical.
When to spot
Year-round, but extremely difficult to observe. Best chances might be during the breeding season when they could be more vocal.
The Tongan Bush-hen's restricted range to a single island makes it particularly vulnerable, and much of its biology and conservation status remains poorly understood.
