The Roviana Rail is a recently discovered and highly localized rail species endemic to two small islands in the Solomon Islands. It is a medium-sized, largely flightless rail with dark brown plumage and a stout bill, inhabiting dense forest undergrowth. This species is rare and little-known.
Where to spot
Endemic to the islands of Rendova and New Georgia in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. It inhabits dense lowland primary forest.
How to spot
Look for its dark brown plumage and stout bill. It is extremely elusive; the best chance for detection is by listening for its calls, described as a series of loud, clattering 'clack-clack-clack' notes or a soft grunting.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Due to its secretive nature and limited range, observations are rare.

This rail was only formally described in 2000, making it one of the most recent bird discoveries in the Solomon Islands, highlighting the region's rich, yet often poorly documented, biodiversity.
