Spotted
The Siberian Thrush is a shy and elusive forest bird known for the striking plumage of the male, featuring a distinctive black mask and white supercilium. Females and juveniles are browner with scaly patterns.
Where to spot
Breeds in the taiga forests of Siberia and East Asia, including Japan and Sakhalin. It undertakes long migrations to winter in Southeast Asia, reaching countries like Indonesia and the Philippines.
How to spot
Search dense undergrowth, often near streams or damp areas, in quiet forests. Due to its shy nature, patience is key. Listen for its distinctive, pure, flute-like song, often given from hidden perches.
When to spot
Best opportunities are during spring and autumn migration, as they pass through various habitats. During breeding or winter, they are very secretive and hard to find in dense forests.

Despite being primarily a ground-forager, the Siberian Thrush has remarkably long legs, which might be an adaptation for navigating dense undergrowth in its preferred forest habitats.
