Breeds in open montane and alpine habitats of western North America, from Alaska to Mexico. Winters in the southwestern US and Mexico.

Its almost entirely blue plumage (male) is unmistakable. Look for them hovering over open grasslands or perched on low shrubs and fences in mountainous or prairie environments.

Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Best observed during spring and summer in high-altitude breeding grounds. Look for them in open plains during winter.
