Spotted
The Malaysian Plover is a small, distinctive shorebird found along the sandy coasts of Southeast Asia. Males have a striking black and rufous breast band, while females are duller.
Where to spot
Sandy beaches, mudflats, and coastal dunes throughout Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of Indonesia.
How to spot
Scan sandy beaches, particularly quiet, undisturbed stretches. The male's distinct black and rufous breast bands are unmistakable. Observe patiently, as they can be inconspicuous.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident coastal habitats. Active during daylight hours, especially at low tide.
This plover is often seen foraging at the very edge of the receding waves, quickly darting in and out to snatch small invertebrates exposed by the surf.
