Spotted
The Friendly Ground Dove is a robust, terrestrial pigeon found across several Pacific island nations. It is known for its relatively approachable nature compared to other ground-dwelling doves.
Where to spot
Distributed across a number of Pacific islands, including Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga, where it inhabits forests, woodlands, and sometimes even disturbed areas or gardens.
How to spot
Look for this dove walking on the ground, often in clearings, forest edges, or even near human settlements. Its distinctive vocalizations, a soft 'hoo-hoo-hoo', can also aid in identification.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, often foraging most intensely during the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon.
Its common name, 'Friendly Ground Dove,' reflects observations that it can be less shy around humans than many other ground dove species, allowing for closer views.
