The King Kookaburra (Dacelo rex) is a large, powerful kingfisher endemic to New Guinea. It is characterized by its robust build, a dark brown head, and a brilliant blue back and rump, often with a rufous wash on the belly.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Guinea. Inhabits lowland and hill rainforests, often in the forest interior or along clearings.
How to spot
Look for its large size and distinct coloration perched high in the canopy or on exposed branches. Listen for its loud, deep 'kwaa-kwaa-kwaa' calls, which are quite different from the Laughing Kookaburra.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Its loud calls are often heard in the early mornings and late afternoons.
This kookaburra is a formidable predator, known to hunt a wide variety of prey including large insects, lizards, small snakes, and even other birds, showcasing its 'kingly' predatory prowess.
