Spotted
The Senegal Kingfisher is a common and distinctive kingfisher found across sub-Saharan Africa. It is identified by its bright red bill, blue back, and a white and grey patterned head.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting savannas, open woodlands, and bushland, often near water but can be found in drier areas as well.
How to spot
Look for its bright red bill and blue back as it perches conspicuously on branches or wires. Listen for its loud, characteristic 'che-che-che' or 'tew-tew-tew' calls, often given from a high perch.
When to spot
Resident year-round in most of its range, though some populations are migratory. Active during daylight hours, especially in the mornings and late afternoons.
