The Serendib Scops Owl is a very recently discovered species of owl, endemic to the humid lowland rainforests of Sri Lanka. It is one of the smallest and rarest scops owls.

Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity, small size, and dense habitat. Primarily identified by its distinctive, mournful, frog-like call. Requires dedicated nocturnal searches with spotlighting in specific forest reserves.

Strictly nocturnal. Most vocal just before dawn and after dusk.
