The São Tomé Scops Owl is a small, endemic owl found only on São Tomé Island in the Gulf of Guinea. It is a critically endangered species facing severe habitat loss.
Where to spot
Endemic to São Tomé Island, São Tomé and Príncipe, primarily in lowland and montane rainforests.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and restricted habitat. Primarily identified by its distinctive, soft 'hoo-hoo' call. Requires dedicated nocturnal searches within remnant forest patches.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Observations are exceptionally rare.
