The Giant Scops Owl is the largest of the Asian scops owls, endemic to the Philippines. It is a powerful nocturnal predator of the islands' rainforests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines (primarily Mindanao, Basilan, Dinagat). Inhabits lowland and montane rainforests.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, deep hoot, often a single 'hoo.' Look for its large size for a scops owl, prominent ear tufts, and mottled brown plumage. Spotlighting in dense rainforest.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most vocal after dusk.
