Spotted
The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl is a small, relatively plain-faced owl found in the montane forests of Central America. Unlike its northern relative, it lacks distinct spots on its forehead and crown.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests, usually at higher elevations. Its range extends from southern Mexico through Central America, down to Panama.
How to spot
Listen for its repetitive hooting calls after dark. Spotting it requires patience and a spotlight, as it typically perches in dense tree cover.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. The best time for observation is at night, especially when listening for their calls.

This elusive owl is often detected more by its distinct vocalizations, a series of short, repeated hoots, than by visual sightings in its dense forest habitat.
