Spotted
Schneider's Pitta is a strikingly patterned and highly localized pitta species, endemic to the montane forests of Sumatra. Its vibrant blues, greens, and reds make it a true jewel of the undergrowth.
Where to spot
Montane rainforests, primarily at elevations between 800-1,700 meters, in Sumatra, Indonesia.
How to spot
Listen for its distinct, loud whistles that echo through the forest. Target areas with dense undergrowth and leaf litter. Given its rarity and localized distribution, engaging a local guide is highly recommended.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best chances are during the breeding season when birds are more vocal, typically during the wetter months (e.g., October-April in parts of Sumatra). Early morning is ideal.
This species was once thought to be extinct, having gone unrecorded for many decades, before its rediscovery in 1988, making it a 'Lazarus species' for ornithologists.
