The Scarlet-breasted Dacnis is a rare and highly localized tanager, with males displaying stunning black plumage contrasted by a vivid scarlet breast and iridescent blue on the crown and rump.
Where to spot
Highly localized to a small area of humid foothill and lower montane forests in southwestern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Seek out known fruiting or flowering trees in appropriate habitat. The male's brilliant scarlet breast is an unmistakable field mark.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Observation often requires specific trips to its known localities, best undertaken in the morning.
