Spotted
Lesson's Seedeater is a small, migratory seedeater, with males exhibiting a distinctive black-and-white pattern. It is a common species of open, grassy areas.
Where to spot
Breeds in northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Guianas) and parts of Central America; winters south to Bolivia and Brazil. Found in open grasslands, savannas, and pastures, generally below 1,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for the male's distinct black-and-white head pattern. They often feed on grass seeds, so scan grassy fields. Listen for their simple, often buzzy, song which helps locate them.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (northern summer) when males are in full plumage and vocal. During migration, they can be seen in various habitats.
Males are easily identifiable by their black cap, white throat, and black malar stripe, a striking contrast that aids significantly in species recognition among similar seedeaters.
