Found in humid montane forests of the Andes, ranging from Colombia and Venezuela south through Ecuador and Peru.

Look in the mid-story to canopy of humid montane forests, often joining mixed-species flocks. Its rufous crest, while not always obvious, is a key field mark. Listen for its high-pitched calls.

A resident species, observable year-round in its range. Best observed in the mornings.
