The Yellow-backed Tanager is a small, attractive tanager, with males displaying a black head and back, a bright yellow patch on the back, and yellow underparts. Females are duller.

Widespread across humid lowland and foothill forests of South America, east of the Andes, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia and Brazil.
