The Yellow-backed Tanager is a small, attractive tanager, with males displaying a black head and back, a bright yellow patch on the back, and yellow underparts. Females are duller.
Where to spot
Widespread across humid lowland and foothill forests of South America, east of the Andes, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia and Brazil.
How to spot
Look for it foraging actively in the mid-to-upper canopy. The yellow patch on its back, though sometimes obscured, is the key field mark.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the morning, often joining mixed-species flocks.
