Spotted
The Scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus) is an endangered diving duck native to East Asia. It is known for its distinctive scale-like pattern on its flanks and its preference for clear, fast-flowing rivers with forested banks during the breeding season.
Where to spot
Critically endangered and very localized. Breeds in southeastern Russia and northeastern China, wintering primarily in southern China, Korea, and Japan. Found on clean rivers, lakes, and coastal areas.
How to spot
Look for its unique scaly pattern on the flanks, especially visible on the male. Both sexes have a shaggy crest. They are often shy, requiring patience and good optics. Listen for their calls, particularly around their secluded breeding sites.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (spring/summer) on forested rivers, or during winter (late autumn/winter) on larger rivers and coastal areas in its wintering grounds.

The 'scaly-sided' appearance, which gives the bird its common name, is created by narrow black feather edges that contrast with white centers, particularly striking on the male's flanks.
