Spotted
The Fulvous Whistling-Duck is a medium-sized duck with rich, warm plumage and a distinctive upright posture. Known for its clear whistling calls, it often forms large flocks, especially outside the breeding season.
Where to spot
Found in disjunct populations across the globe: parts of North and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. Look for them in shallow wetlands, rice fields, marshes, and lagoons.
How to spot
Look for its uniform fulvous (tawny-orange) body, dark back, and white flank stripe. Listen for its characteristic 'kee-wee-oo' whistling call, often given in flight or by disturbed flocks. They often perch conspicuously.
When to spot
Best observed during early mornings or late evenings when they are most active. They are present year-round in their native ranges, but numbers may increase during migration periods.
