Spotted
Steller's Eider is the smallest and arguably most elegant of the eiders, known for its distinctive and intricate plumage patterns. Males are particularly vibrant with their white head, black eye-patch, green cheek, and complex black and white body markings.
Where to spot
Breeds along the Arctic coasts of Siberia and Alaska. Winters primarily along the coasts of the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, with smaller numbers wintering in coastal Norway and occasionally other parts of northern Europe. Prefers shallow coastal waters, lagoons, and estuaries.
How to spot
Look for them in shallow coastal waters, often close to shore. Males are highly distinctive with their unique head pattern. Females are uniformly warm brown with a prominent pale eye-ring and two small white wing bars; their smaller size compared to other eiders is also a key identifier.
When to spot
Best observed during winter on coastal waters, or during the short breeding season in Arctic regions.
