Spotted
The Elf Owl is the smallest owl in the world, found in arid and semi-arid regions of southwestern North America and Mexico. It is known for its tiny size and charming calls.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid regions, particularly deserts with saguaro cacti, riparian woodlands, and thorn scrub, in the southwestern USA and Mexico.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, high-pitched 'chuck-chuck-chuck' or 'wee-wee-wee' calls. Spotting is very difficult due to its size and nocturnal habits; use a spotlight to scan saguaro cavities and tree holes.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most vocal from dusk through the night, especially during the breeding season when males call frequently.
