Spotted
Hardy's Pygmy Owl is a tiny and recently described owl found in the humid montane forests of the eastern Andes. It is one of the smallest and least-known owls in South America.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in southern Peru and northern Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, high-pitched vocalizations. Spotting is very challenging due to its small size, dense habitat, and rarity; expert guidance is often needed in its remote habitat.
When to spot
Primarily diurnal, active during the day, especially at dawn and dusk. Visual observations are extremely difficult.
