Spotted
The Santa Marta Woodstar is an endemic and endangered hummingbird, found exclusively within the isolated Santa Marta Mountains of northern Colombia. Males are recognizable by their distinctive violet gorget.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests and forest edges of the Santa Marta Mountains in northern Colombia, primarily at elevations ranging from 1,400 to 2,000 meters. Its presence is indicative of pristine cloud forest habitat.
How to spot
Look for its small size and quick, erratic flight within its very limited geographic range. Males are distinguished by their iridescent violet gorget. Due to its rarity and often elusive nature, patience and quiet observation near flowering plants are crucial for a successful sighting.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging for nectar from flowering plants. It is a year-round resident within its unique mountainous habitat.

Its extremely restricted range and reliance on specific cloud forest habitats make the Santa Marta Woodstar a critically vulnerable species, serving as a powerful symbol of the unique and threatened biodiversity of the Santa Marta Mountains.
