Spotted
The Green Hermit is a striking, relatively large hummingbird known for its deep iridescent green plumage and distinctive long, decurved bill. It is a common inhabitant of the dense forest understory in its range.
Where to spot
Found in humid tropical and subtropical forests, forest edges, and dense second growth, primarily across Central and northern South America, from Honduras south to Bolivia and Brazil.
How to spot
Look for them hovering near large, often red or orange, tubular flowers in the forest understory. Listen for their distinctive high-pitched, repetitive calls, which can often betray their presence.
When to spot
Most active during early morning and late afternoon, when light is softer in the understory and nectar flow is often at its peak.
