The Buffy Helmetcrest is a distinctive, high-altitude hummingbird renowned for its prominent crest and beard-like throat tufts. Males boast a buffy or yellowish-white 'beard' and crest, giving them a unique appearance. It inhabits the challenging paramo ecosystem.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high Andes of Colombia, specifically found in the northern Cordillera Oriental. It exclusively inhabits open paramo and sub-paramo grasslands, usually at elevations between 3,000 and 4,500 meters (9,800-14,800 feet).
How to spot
Look for its striking buffy crest and prominent, fluffy buffy-white 'beard' below the bill. Its tail is often white with dark tips. Observe it perching on low vegetation or feeding on small paramo flowers, often hovering low to the ground. Its unique head ornamentation makes it unmistakable.
When to spot
Observable year-round during daylight, especially on sunny mornings. Their activity may be reduced during harsh weather conditions typical of the paramo, such as strong winds or fog.
