Spotted
The Blue-vented Hummingbird is a lovely species characterized by its glossy green plumage, often with a contrasting blue or violet rump and undertail coverts. It's a common and widespread hummingbird in its range.
Where to spot
Widespread in Central America, ranging from southern Nicaragua south through Costa Rica, Panama, and into northern Colombia and Venezuela. Found in a variety of open to semi-open habitats, including forest edges, clearings, gardens, and coffee plantations.
How to spot
Look for its iridescent green body and the distinctive blue or violet wash on its rump and undertail coverts, which can be seen when it hovers or perches. They are often seen at hummingbird feeders or on flowering trees and shrubs.
When to spot
Present year-round. Active during daylight hours, with peak foraging activity in the early morning and late afternoon.
Hummingbirds are the only birds capable of true sustained hovering. They can also fly backwards and upside down, making them incredibly agile aerialists.
