Spotted
The Mallee Striated Grasswren is a small, highly elusive grasswren, characterized by its heavily streaked plumage and preference for dense mallee scrub in arid Australia.
Where to spot
Found in dense mallee eucalypt scrublands across parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales.
How to spot
Approach quietly and scan dense mallee and spinifex patches. Listen for its soft, insect-like calls, which are often the only indication of its presence. Persistence is key, as they are very shy.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during early mornings or late afternoons, especially when quiet and still, as they are most active then.
This species is incredibly adept at navigating through dense, thorny mallee vegetation, preferring to run rapidly through the undergrowth rather than flying, making it very difficult to flush or observe.
