Where to spot
Endemic to the highlands of New Guinea, inhabiting fast-flowing, clear mountain streams, rivers, and high-altitude lakes, typically within dense montane forest.
How to spot
Look for its dark, mottled brown plumage, pale yellow bill, and agile movements in fast water. They are usually found singly or in pairs. Their secretive nature makes quiet, patient observation from a distance crucial.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Observing them requires significant effort due to their remote habitat and elusive nature. Best chances are during daylight hours, by patiently scanning appropriate riverine habitats.
