Where to spot
Found in grasslands, open woodlands, and agricultural areas of southern Chile and Argentina, including Tierra del Fuego. Some populations migrate north for the austral winter.
How to spot
Look for its striking ash-grey head, neck, and upper breast, which transitions to chestnut-brown on the lower breast and belly. The back is dark grey-brown with some barring, and the bill and legs are black. Males and females have similar plumage.
When to spot
Year-round resident in the core of its range, but migratory in the southernmost parts, moving north to central Argentina during the austral winter (April-August).
