The Northern Rufous-winged Antwren is a small, active antwren distinguished by its rufous wing margins and its habit of foraging in the mid-story of humid forests. It was recently split from a similar species.
Where to spot
Humid forests of Central America (Costa Rica, Panama) and northern Colombia.
How to spot
Search in the mid-story and lower canopy of humid primary and mature secondary forests. It often joins mixed-species flocks. Listen for its distinctive, accelerating trill song.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning activity.
This species was recently recognized as distinct from the Southern Rufous-winged Antwren based on vocalizations and genetic analysis, highlighting the cryptic diversity within antbirds and the ongoing work in avian taxonomy.
