The Black-backed Antshrike is a medium-sized antshrike with a prominent black back in males. It is a resident of dense undergrowth in humid forests.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth and secondary growth in humid lowland and foothill evergreen forests, primarily in northeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating 'tew-tew-tew' call. Scan the dense low vegetation, watching for subtle movements. Patience is required due to its secretive nature.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Calls are frequent, especially during the breeding season.
