The Barred Antshrike is a striking and highly vocal bird, with males featuring prominent black-and-white barring across their bodies. It is a common resident of tropical forests.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, and dense secondary growth, across much of Central and South America, from southern Mexico to northern Argentina.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, ringing 'quip-quip-quip-quiiiiiiip' song, which is a common sound in its habitat. Scan dense tangles and low branches, watching for movement. Often seen in pairs.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. Calls can be heard throughout the day, especially during the breeding season.
