Spotted
The Rusty-naped Pitta is a large, secretive pitta with olive-brown upperparts, a pale belly, and a distinctive rusty-orange patch on the back of its neck (nape).
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and bamboo thickets, particularly in dense undergrowth, across mainland Southeast Asia, from the Himalayas to Vietnam.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, distinctive calls, which are often the only way to locate this extremely shy and well-camouflaged bird. Remain perfectly still in likely habitats.
When to spot
Year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (typically April-July). Active during daylight hours.
The Rusty-naped Pitta's calls are often described as a loud, mournful whistle, which can carry quite far through the dense forest.
